Can heat and touch-sensitive book To You replicate human connection?

When British-Cypriot multimedia artist, performance maker and academic Yiota Demetriou went through a tough period, she wrote love letters—never sent—to help her through it. Afterwards she decided to turn them into an innovative, interactive book about love and loss addressed to ‘You’, the reader, with help from book artist/designer Tom Abba.  To You is an artists’ book in an A5 paper-based concertina form that is heat and touch-sensitive. The book presents an intimate reading experience, as its pages—that are full of poetic love letters written in prose—are covered in black ink, which at first glance makes them seem unreadable, until they are warmed by human touch. The book is an objection of devotion and a metaphor for relationships—expressing, manifesting and almost materialising the insecurity and vulnerabilities that come with love, loss, and grief. The intimate letters hiding inside the book only reveal themselves when the reader establishes an affectionate connection by touching its black-inked pages.  In the beginning came the letters, my own vessel of consolation, that weren’t intended for the world to see. Instead, I wrote these having someone significant ...

To get better on the trail, you’re going to have to get off it. You might

To get better on the trail, you’re going to have to get off it. You might as well be comfortable when you do. Yoga can do wonders for runners, from helping to calm the mind to assisting with stretching tight hamstrings. A consistent yoga practice can help strengthen your core muscles to better support your spine during long runs, essential for better form. If you’re not dedicating some quality time in Downward Dog, now is as good of a time as any to start. Bur first, you’re going to need a mat. Not just any mat, either. The right equipment is worth the investment, as it can help stave off injury by preventing slipping during sweaty sessions and provide a cushioned surface that will protect your joints. Plus, it’s nice to know you’re on a sanitary surface (that’s housing only your sweat). Runners require a special set of requirements in a yoga mat. Portability, for one—you’ll want to be able to carry your mat with you when you head to a studio. Also, affordability—you already spend every cent on extra gear. And, since runners are most likely not yoga experts, we looked at mats that offer tools and features to help beginners. Between several rounds of early morning flows and...

The latest in our how to mend series can help you save water, energy and cash

The latest in our how to mend series can help you save water, energy and cash with household tools and simple spares You will need:A slot or cross-head screwdriverAn adjustable spannerAssorted washers or replacement cartridge There are essentially two types of tap: traditional taps and monobloc lever taps that control flow and temperature with a single handle. Traditional taps drip because an internal rubber seal, or washer, has perished and needs replacing. Monobloc level taps have ceramic cartridges that occasionally need to be replaced. The more expensive the tap, the more extortionate and elusive the replacement cartridge. 1. Before you attempt to fix the leak, either turn the water off at the stop cock (if you don’t know where yours is then it’s important to find out) or turn off the isolation valve. This is normally found on the supply pipes below the sink. Now turn on the tap again to release any water left in the top of the pipe. 2. The first challenge is finding the screw inside the handle that holds the tap together. It is generally hiding under the decorative cap on top of the tap handle. Sometimes you can unscrew the cap by hand, or you may need the help...

Let’s get this out of the way: put simply, fermentation is the process of transforming food

Let’s get this out of the way: put simply, fermentation is the process of transforming food by bacteria, yeasts or other microorganisms. Wait! Before you close your computer in disgust, there are a few things you should know about the process of fermentation and the incredible health benefits it can offer. Fermentation is used to produce some of our most beloved and common foods, including alcohol, yogurt, and sourdough bread. Not so scary, right? Fermentation is a natural phenomenon that humans have been using for culinary benefits for centuries. All over the world, fermented foods play key roles in diets. Whether it’s kimchi in Korea, Kefir in the Middle East, or sauerkraut in Germany, people all over the globe have long recognized both the deliciousness and potent nutritional benefits. In the past 15 years, fermented foods of all types have begun to gain popularity in the U.S. for these same reasons. If you haven’t yet, it’s time to tap into the ancient wisdom of fermentation. Fermentation occurs naturally when bacteria is given the chance to transform the carbohydrates in food into more elemental forms, such as alcohol or acid. In the case of fermented foods, the live, lact...

In communities like the one I grew up in, nannies are a rarity, but a ‘village’ of neighbors and relatives can be counted on to pitch in with childcare. At 27, I’ve never given birth and I’ve never been pregnant. But I like to joke that I have “children.” I didn’t intend to spend my preteen and teenage years helping to raise several of my neighbors’ children. But somehow, children always found me. My first baby was J, whose mother moved into the apartment next to ours when I was in elementary school in Ridgewood, Queens. I helped her clean her apartment some Saturdays, and she’d help me bake brownies. We watched ’90s telenovelas together – it was J’s mother, and not my own, who explained the plotline of “La Usurpadora” to me. When I was 11 she told my family that she was pregnant. My mom explained that the situation behind our neighbor’s pregnancy was complicated, and that she would need our support. So I looked at sonograms, helped her carry heavy bags, and painted the baby’s room. My siblings and I pitched in to organize and set up the baby shower. And right after J was born, I slept on my neighbor’s couch, getting up at 2 a.m. to help fix his bottle and feed him. I almost fel...

Is it possible to restore the original whiteness of our kitchen cupboard doors? I think my

Is it possible to restore the original whiteness of our kitchen cupboard doors? I think my doors are plastic. For melamine doors, a melamine primer should be used before repainting. Beware, “high gloss” units have a thin film of plastic, which can get scratched and peel. In this case, your best option would be to replace the doors. For natural wood you could try a product called Woca Softwood Lye, which can be used to maintain the original “whiteness” of wood. A 2.5-litre tub costs around £23.95 with a coverage of about 10m sq per litre. This is mixed and applied to thoroughly cleaned and sanded bare wood. It should be allowed to dry completely, after which the wood is polished. Then the wood is cleaned with a natural soap or oiled. If your kitchen doors were previously painted, then you need to thoroughly clean and rub them down before repainting them. If you strip the paint down to the bare wood you will need to use a primer before repainting. I have noticed tiny millet-size black bits that float around in the bath water. From my investigations, they only come from the hot tap. They don’t appear in any other sanitary ware either. What is causing them? It sounds as if they are...

The customer relationship benefits of scaling up The FABRICATOR STAMPING Journal The Welder The Tube and Pipe Journal The FABRICATOR en Español The Additive Report The FABRICATOR The Welder The Tube and Pipe Journal STAMPING Journal The Additive Report The FABRICATOR en Español

An operator at Anchor Fabrication forms a cosmetically sensitive workpiece. Different companies within the Anchor Partners organization share capacities and capabilities (like brakes with specific tonnage capacities), often winning work that individual companies wouldn’t be able to do alone. Metal fabrication is dominated by private businesses, many of them family-owned—or, at the very least, run like a family. Walk into a custom fabricator almost anywhere in the country, and you often get the impression that the employees have known each other forever. It’s part of what gives this business its refreshingly unpretentious character. It’s why people come to work every day, and it’s why some would never dream of leaving. That said, not every family owner has kin that want to take over. The founder’s children might like certain aspects of the business—perhaps solving engineering- or machinery-related problems—but might have no interest in leadership. Or they might choose a different path—not an outlandish decision, considering the effects of globalization and the changes manufacturing’s been through after the 2001 and 2009 recessions. So what then? Succession planning can get tricky...
