The best electric scooters, e-bikes and rideable tech we’ve tested

It was a rare sunny day during an otherwise rainy spring season. I was cruising down Fredrick Douglas Boulevard just past 110th street, when a black Dodge Charger pulled up next to me, keeping pace toward the next light. I glanced over and saw the driver looking down at his phone, not paying attention. He accelerated to make the next right, not realizing that, on a Trek Super Commuter + 8S e-bike, I could easily hit 30 miles per hour, far faster than any car stuck in traffic usually can on the streets of Manhattan.  About to get crunched by the Dodge, I shouted, “Yo!” to the driver through his open window. Looking up from his phone he shouted back, “What are you doing?”  “I’m in the bike lane, what are you doing?” I replied. He clearly thought his car could beat me to the corner, but once I kicked into the Trek’s Turbo mode that adds more pedal-assist power, I shot past him.  It was just another day testing electric-powered rideables on the streets of New York, where the drivers hate the bikers, the bikers hate the drivers and everybody hates the scooter riders. And e-scooters and e-bikes are just the start of what’s availabl...

New infotainment ready to roll at 2019 Canadian Auto Show

With the Canadian International Auto Show (CIAS) kicking off in Toronto, some of the latest in infotainment appears ready to go in 2019. The last couple of years have seen a slow, but steady, change where automakers are trying to sell consumers on the technology they’re offering. Volkswagen is pushing a new modular platform, Kia thinks its Soul EV will a competitive electric car, and even Kijiji is presenting itself as a major sales platform. Not everything everyone is showing is necessarily new, at least to discerning customers, but there is plenty that will be at this year’s show. Mercedes-Benz will roll out its brand new MBUX system in the A-Class and GLE in Canada as early as this spring. A previous hands-on with a pre-production version showed some promise, but with a little extra polish, the system did look and feel a little better — at least from a cursory experience. A full review will drop on MobileSyrup soon. Kia has given its UVO system a bit of a facelift, now using a wider display that can split the home screen into three sections for contextual information at all times. It will continue to run CarPlay and Android Auto the same way, only now neither platform has to...

Open Season: Bluefish are plentiful and here’s how to catch them – Sports – southcoasttoday.com

Bluefish have arrived in Buzzards Bay’s inshore waters, and spring and fall are the best times to hook into big ‘choppers’ topping 10 pounds and more. Pound-for-pound, the bluefish is one of the gamest fish in our local waters and they’re easy to catch, usually. Schools of blues can hold tons of fish, providing hours of non-stop action and excitement. Tackle is simple. A nine-foot medium action spinning rod with about a 5000-size reel loaded with 15-pound test monofilament is a good all-around outfit for casting from shore. If you’re casting from a boat, you can drop down to a seven-foot rod. Get a few surface poppers, some wire leaders, a pair of long-nose pliers and you’re in the game. Blues have razor-sharp teeth and wire leaders keep your lure from getting cut off. I prefer 30-pound test wire and 12-inch length when I’m casting from a boat, but I go with the longer 18-inch when casting from shore. Just make sure the leaders are black and have smaller snaps and swivels. The heavier hardware will hinder the action of the lure. A 1 ½-ounce popper is the standard and I’m partial to traditional red/white and blue/white color combinations but almost any popper in any color will ge...

EL CAJON — There is a scene in the classic 1941 film, “Citizen Kane” where an exuberant millionaire playboy Kane (Orson Welles) exclaims, “I think it would be fun to run a newspaper.” The context here being that publishing a paper is nothing more than a simple diversion. In local terms, Robert Zakar, who was raised in a family of merchants and has successfully operated gas stations, grocery outlets and convenience stores, decided to take a left turn and delve into — well, for lack of a better term — the body transport business. “When people pass away, we will take the deceased to a hospital or funeral home,” Zakar said. “My brothers would handle the actual transportation, while I would do the marketing and accounting. “At first, I did not want anything to do with removing bodies, it seemed pretty creepy to me; but when I thought about it, I realized that it was about the loved ones left behind,” he said. “I foun...

National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission directs Mercedes Benz to pay Rs 2 lakh to customer for defects

The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, the apex consumer body, has dismissed Mercedes-Benz India’s appeal against the Chandigarh State Commission’s order to pay ₹2 lakh to a Chandigarh resident for a series of defects in the luxury car he bought from the company four years ago. The NCDRC upheld the State Commission’s order relying on an expert report by three professors of the Punjab Engineering College, who said that the problem in the vehicle had not been resolved. The State Commission on July 13 last year had requested the Principal of Punjab Engineering College to constitute the team. V K Jain, the commission’s presiding member, said that the vehicle is expected to run smoothly as the owner paid Rs 37 lakh for it. “In these circumstances, the grant of compensation for ₹2 lakh cannot be said to be excessive or unreasonable by any standards considering that the vehicle in question was a Mercedes vehicle, which was expected to run smoothly without giving much trouble to the owner. He having spent as much as Rs 37 lakh for purchase of the vehicle, it had been troubling the complainant right from the time it was purchased, developing one snag or the other,” the com...

These days, soft tops are as varied and vast as the latte options at Starbucks; and thanks

These days, soft tops are as varied and vast as the latte options at Starbucks; and thanks to Bestop, they’re twice as exciting. One of the company’s more recent developments, the Trektop NX Glide, offers a whole new way to blend the inside of a Jeep and the outside of the world. As a convertible soft top, the open-air enjoyment of the NX Glide made it a fine choice for this 2014 two-door JK, owned by Steve Peacock. Peacock’s passion for wheeling meant that he would get a great deal of enjoyment from the NX Glide. We reached out to Bestop for an NX Glide and dug up some more details, too. Speaking with Bestop’s Cassie Hughes, we got a better understanding of the product. “The vision behind the NX Glide was to make it the best of all worlds,” she said. “It’s fully retractable, and the slant back is reminiscent of our NX Trektop, which is one of our bestsellers. It’s the very first fully convertible slant back zipperless soft top on the market.” Optional for the NX Glide is Black Twill fabric, which lends the soft top a more elegant look and feel. “Twill is our premium fabric, made of 30-ounce triple acrylic compared to the 28-ounce Black Diamond, which is our standard fabric,” e...

Advanced industrial lasers have evolved well beyond simple cutting and welding applications. Laser technology now offers

Advanced industrial lasers have evolved well beyond simple cutting and welding applications. Laser technology now offers an industrial de-coating and surface cleaning solution that is cost effective as well as responsive to environmental concerns. From the automated cleaning of molds to precise de-coating to oxide removal, laser surface treatments are proving to be an attractive option to traditional labor-intensive methods. In the past decade laser paint removal and cleaning systems have generated significant interest as a viable alternative to conventional cleaning and paint removal technologies. Research on mobile, reliable, and powerful laser systems for cleaning and paint removal operations began in the late 1980s with the modification of welding or cutting lasers into laser systems for surface preparation. This approach did not meet the requirements for surface preparation, which are significantly different than for cutting and welding. In the early 1990s, research took place around the world for more efficient, reliable laser systems for surface preparation work. It took another few years to develop the technology from experimental laboratory systems to dependable systems...
