The Body Shop launches plastic recycling initiative

Beauty and body care retailer The Body Shop is stepping up its sustainability efforts with the launch of its new recycling scheme that helps consumers recycle their empty packaging. The new initiative, which will launch in Australia on June 10, allows customers to return their empty bottles, jars, tubs, tubes and pots in The Body Shop stores for recycling. The scheme, established in partnership with recycling company TerraCycle, was introduced in the UK, Canada and France on May 10. It will be introduced in Germany soon. In a bid to tackle plastic pollution, the global personal care brand has also announced it plans to purchase 250 tonnes of community-trade recycled plastic from Bengaluru, India, and use them in nearly three million 250ml haircare bottles by the end of 2019. According to The Body Shop, it has already started using community-trade recycled plastic in 250ml haircare bottles in partnership with Plastics for Change and soon, the retailer said it will include its bestselling Ginger Shampoo. The bottles will contain 100 per cent recycled plastic, excluding the bottle caps. Fifteen per cent of that will be community-trade recycled plastic; the remainder will be recycle...

What’s in season: How to make the most of cherries in June

British cherries’ unmistakable flavour can make all the difference to both sweet and savoury dishes. Here are five choice picks from some of the UK’s best chefs There’s a bit of a ritual when it comes to eating fresh cherries. Picking off the stem, biting your way around the stone and, if they’re really, really fresh, the inevitable battle to stop the juice dripping down your chin onto your (inevitably white) top.  The fact that these little red stone fruits are only in season for a few months just adds to their allure – you’ll see them in the shops as the weather gets warm. Then, before you know it, they’re gone, with only frozen or tinned varieties left until next year. Most of them appear during July and August, although varieties grown throughout Europe can appear a bit earlier.  While cherries are perfectly delicious simply eaten on their own, they also work really well in recipes, lending their deep red colour and intense flavour to all manner of dishes, both sweet and savoury. Whether they’re used to garnish a plate, put centre stage in a dessert or cooked down into a sauce for rich meats, they can make all the difference to your cooking. These five recipes come straight ...

Gardening: From freezing to dehydrating, many ways to preserve your tomatoes – News – providencejournal.com

The easiest, quickest way to save tomatoes is to freeze them whole for winter. Tomatoes also store well if you dry them in a dehydrator. This is my favorite time of the year. Tomato time. Tomato sandwiches for breakfast and lunch, tomato, basil and cucumber salads with dinner. Tomatoes in stir fry. Tomatoes going in the freezer, dehydrator and jars of sauce. Oh my! I do love my tomatoes. I grew 35 plants this year, as I usually do. Many gardeners complain that blights are reducing their harvests. It’s true that 30 years ago we had little blight. We covered our plants against the frost, and they kept on producing until October. Now tomato leaves turn yellow and brown in July, and by August many plants are pretty much bare of leaves. Why, people ask, do the early blossoms produce fruits, but then the plants just stop producing? I don’t know all the reasons. I do know that most common tomato diseases are caused by soil-borne fungi that winter-over, coming back year after year. You can minimize the problems by rotating your tomato patch each year, or by planting in a new garden space that was lawn. Usually a new garden in full sun will have few problems, but in the following years, ...

Remembering the Assembly–and Repair–of the Hubble Space Telescope | 2020-01-13

Science writer John Wilford once observed that his articles had to focus on one of these story lines to earn their way into print: “big bang, big bucks, big screwup, or big comeback—and with the Hubble Space Telescope you’ve got them all.” He was right. Since launching into orbit almost 30 years ago, Hubble has gone from the humiliation of “techno turkey” to high-risk recovery to recognition as one of history’s most prolific scientific explorers. Before setting out on its decades-long journey, Hubble was touted as the greatest advance in astronomy since 1610, when Galileo peered up at Jupiter through a telescope he invented. Four centuries later, astronomers hoped that Hubble—then the most complex and costliest satellite ever dispatched into space—would enable them to home in on the big bang. The product of 12 years of design, testing and construction, the gleaming aluminum cylinder would break down barriers of space and time to obtain crystalline images of celestial objects and events never seen or even imagined. “Hubble will probe the secrets of creation,” promised Lennard Fisk, chief scientist for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Instead, a shaping e...

Murder-accused bought acid-proof boots after uncle’s disappearance, trial hears

A Brisbane man accused of murder purchased protective clothing including goggles, a mask, gloves and boots to “work with acids” a week after his uncle disappeared, a court has heard. Robert James Wagner pleaded not guilty at the beginning of his Supreme Court trial in Brisbane to murdering his uncle Gerhard Wagner in January 1999. The court heard neither his body or motorbike has ever been found, and that his death was financially motivated because he held significant assets. Prosecutor Phil McCarthy said Robert Wagner was in a “precarious financial position” at the time of his uncle’s disappearance. He said an employee from a hardware store would give evidence about a customer who purchased protective clothing about a week later. “The customer he was dealing with specifically indicated that he was working with acids and he was working with acids to clean a garage floor,” Mr McCarthy said in his opening address. “Together through this trial we will learn about the precarious financial position of the defendant at that time. The prosecution told the jury it would hear evidence that Robert Wagner told a friend police had accused him...

50 Years Ago: James Taylor’s ‘Sweet Baby James’ Sparks New Genre

The failure of James Taylor’s Beatles-backed 1968 self-titled debut hit him hard, and in more ways than one. He left Apple Records for Warner Bros., in a move that coincided with a more stripped-down approach to music making. Gone were the period-specific orchestrations and odd linking passages. Instead, fans were greeted on Feb. 1, 1970 with a more intimate sound that would define the looming singer-songwriter era. Don’t get the idea, however, that Taylor had any grand plans. “It was quite momentary,” he acknowledged in a 1994 interview with the Orlando Sentinel. “You didn’t think about it five years down the line. To me, life itself was like that then. It was very free. We just went in and did it. At the time, I didn’t know how to think about things like the marketplace, or what people were listening to.” Thankfully, listeners responded, because Taylor was essentially homeless at this point. When not in the studio, he could be found either over at producer Peter Asher’s house or on a couch belonging to guitarist Danny Kortchmar. He just had to finish. Taylor was promised a $20,000 bonus – and, needing one more track, stitc...
